Cricket: Lalchand Rajput appraises Dhoni’s Captaincy

Lalchand Rajput, Team India’s manager during the inaugural edition of the World T20, appreciated Dhoni wicket-keeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni and also commented on how he became one of the best captains the Indian Cricket has ever seen.

According to Rajput Dhoni’s style is close to that of former India captain and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. He considers Ganguly as a person who changed the way cricket was played in India while Dhoni simply took that forward when he became the captain of the side in 2007.

Ganguly always gave players a chance at the highest level including Dhoni, which eventually led him to score a marathon 148 against Pakistan in Vizag in 2005. Rajput regards Dhoni same as Ganguly when it comes mould to giving chance to young players.

“He (Ganguly) used to give players a lot of confidence. Ganguly was the one who changed the mentality of the Indian team and I think it was just carried forward by Dhoni… If Dhoni felt like a certain player had potential, he made sure he gave that player got enough opportunities,” Rajput during a live video interaction with Sportskeeda.

Before becoming the Captain, Dhoni played under several big-name like Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble. As per Rajput Dhoni’s captaincy is a combination of both Ganguly and Dravid.

“He seemed to me like a mixture of Ganguly and Rahul Dravid… Ganguly was very very aggressive and thinking but was positive and thinking.” Rajput said.
